Making It Simple

Lesson 6

God Makes Promises to Abram
Genesis 11:27-15:21

Chapter 12

Verse 1 – God tells Abram to leave Haran, and to go “to a land that I will show you.”
Verse 2 – Promise #1 Great Nation
Verse 3- Promise #2  All nations of the earth shall be blessed through (because of) Abram
Verses 4-5 – Abram departs “as the Lord had spoken to him”.  Abram is 75 years old when he leaves Haran to go to the land the Lord will show him.  He takes with him his wife, Sarai, and his nephew, Lot.  They also took all of their possessions, and their slaves.  With all of this, they came to the land of Canaan.
Verse 7 – Promise #3 Land promise.  Abram’s descendents would receive the land of Canaan.  Abram builds an altar.
Verses 8-9 –  Abram pitches his tent with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east.  Abram builds an altar and moves on south.
Verses 10-20 There comes a famine in the land, and Abram goes to Egypt to live until the end of the famine.  Abram tells his wife Sarai to say she is his sister, instead of his wife (she is his half-sister) so that the Pharoah wouldn’t kill Abram to take his wife.  Pharoah desires to take Sarai for his wife, and pays Abram well for her (like a dowry).  But the Lord sends plagues on Pharoah and his household because of Abram and Sarai.  Pharoah realizes the trouble, confronts Abram and sends he and Sarai away with all that they have.

Chapter 13

Abram leaves Egypt.  He returns to Bethel.  Abram and Lot both are so wealthy that the land can not maintain both men’s herds and people.  There began to be fighting among the herdsmen of Lot and Abram and those herdsmen of the local people.  So Abram tells Lot to choose which way he will go with his possessions, and Abram will go the other way.  So that there would no longer be arguing between them.  Lot looks to the plain of the Jordan (river) and sees that it is good land.  The bible compares it to the garden of the Lord!  So Abram dwells in Canaan and Lot lives in the plain and pitches his tents towards the city of Sodom – (WARNING! The men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked!)
Verse 14-18 God shows Abram all of the land that God will give to Abram’s descendants.

Chapter 14

Lot gets captured in the middle of a war between many different kings.  Abram takes his 318 trained servants and went to rescue Lot.  Abram and his men rescue Lot and retrieve all of the stolen goods, as well as women and other people who had been captured.
Verses 18-20 Abram meets Melchizadek, king of Salem – who is a priest of God.  Melchizadek blesses Abram and Abram pays him a tithe.

Chapter 15

God promises Abram that he will have an heir.
God tells Abram that his descendants will be numbered like the stars.
Verse 6 “And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”
Verse 13-16 – God prophesies that Abram’s descendants will be afflicted 400 years in a strange land, but that his people will also come out of that land with great possessions.  And that in four generations Abram’s people will return to Canaan to them deal with the Amorites.
Verses 17-21 God spells out the land that will be given to Abram’s descendants.  From the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates.  The land of the Kenites, Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
In Your Bible –
Exodus 2:23-3:10
